The Maybelline TattooStudio Brow Pomade is worth buying if you want controlled, buildable brow color without the all-or-nothing mess of brow mascara. At around $10 it’s a drugstore staple, and the dual-ended applicator lets you add as much or as little as you want. Buy it if natural-looking brows matter more to you than instant, dramatic coverage.

Quick Verdict
I did my eyebrows yesterday with brow mascara and they looked crazy, way too dark, way too full. My daughter even asked what was going on with them. The Maybelline TattooStudio Brow Pomade is the one I went back to because I can actually control how much goes on.
Buy if you:
- want brows that look naturally filled in, not drawn on
- have sparser brow color as you’ve gotten older
- like a dual-ended tool with a brush to blend before you commit
- want a product you can wipe off with a cloth if you mess up
Skip if you:
- got burned like I did with brow mascara drying into a gel that wouldn’t come off without washing your whole face, and now want zero learning curve
- struggle to get both eyebrows even since the pomade still asks for a steady hand
- want one swipe and done, this takes a little dipping and building

The Brow Mascara Disaster That Sent Me Back
I did my eyebrows yesterday with brow mascara and they looked absolutely wild, too dark, too full, and my daughter didn’t even recognize them. I used eyebrow mascara, and they were way too dark, way too much in there, and way too full. My daughter looked at me and kind of went, “what’s going on your eyebrows?” And I was like, I know. So I went back to my favorite, the Maybelline TattooStudio Brow Pomade, because this one lets you control how much is going on and adjust it as you go, which the mascara just never let me do.
Where This Sits Against Brow Mascara and Pencils
A pomade sits in its own lane compared to a pencil or tinted brow gel: it’s thicker, you’re dipping a brush into product rather than dragging a tip across skin, and that extra friction means you can feather on a little at a time instead of depositing a full line in one stroke. That’s the mechanical reason it gives you control the mascara never did.
How the Dual-Ended Applicator Actually Works

It comes with a spoolie on one end and an angled brush on the other, and the first thing you want to do is brush your eyebrow up before you even touch the pomade. Then you dip the angled brush into the pot and apply as much or as little as you want. I’ve used mine a few times, you can see the wear on the brush already. I just find it so controlled in how I can apply it, even when I forget to brush my brow up first like I did on one side.
What It Actually Gives Me, Especially Now I’m Older
As I’ve gotten a little bit older I just don’t have as much natural color in my eyebrows, and this pomade gives me more color and fills it in a bit, but it still looks really natural, which is definitely the look I’m always going for. It’s not trying to sculpt a dramatic, editorial brow. It’s filling in what’s thinning out, and that’s the whole appeal for me.
My Eyebrows Are Never the Same Shape, and That’s Fine
My two brows have different shapes and I’ve made peace with that, but the pomade actually helps here: because I’m building color in small dips rather than committing to a single stroke, I can add a little more to the sparse side until they match. You can’t really mess this up too much with the pomade, and if you do, you just take a cloth and wipe it off. That’s the whole thing I couldn’t do with the eyebrow mascara, it solidified like a gel and I couldn’t even get it off until I washed my whole face.
So Is It Worth Going Back To?
Yes, and that’s exactly why I went back to it after one bad day with a different product. At around $10 on Amazon, it’s not asking for much commitment, and the ash brown shade works well for filling without going darker than my natural brow. The trade-off is real: this is a dip-and-build product, not a one-swipe fix, so budget an extra thirty seconds over a pencil. But that time buys you something the mascara never could, a cloth wipe undoes any mistake, no face wash required.
Pros
- Buildable coverage, you control exactly how much goes on
- Fills in sparser brow color without looking fake
- Dual-ended brush and spoolie in one tool
- Easy to wipe off with a cloth if you’re heavy-handed
Cons
- Uneven natural brows still take extra care to match side to side
- Easy to forget the brush-up step and end up with a messier starting point
- Requires dipping and building rather than one quick swipe
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this if I have uneven or asymmetrical eyebrows?
Yes, that’s actually part of why I like it. My eyebrows are never quite the same shape as each other, and the buildable pomade lets me add more to one side to even things out rather than committing to a set line like a pencil would.
What happens if I apply too much pomade by accident?
You just take a cloth and wipe it off. That’s a big part of what won me over after my brow mascara disaster, where the product solidified into a gel and I couldn’t remove it without washing my entire face.
Does the pomade dry out or get hard to apply over time?
I’ve used mine a few times and the applicator shows some wear, but the pomade itself still dips and applies easily each time. It hasn’t solidified or changed texture the way the eyebrow mascara did on me.
