The Schwarzkopf Keratin Root Light Brown Temporary Color Thickening Spray is worth buying if you want silvers hidden between salon visits in seconds. It filled in my part line with real depth and never felt sticky. Buy it, but order a shade lighter than you think, because Light Brown sprays medium to dark brown.

How this review was made: written from my own video review of this product. Every opinion here is my own, from using it myself.

Quick Verdict

I sprayed it on my hand first and the “Light Brown” came out medium to dark brown. On my actual part line, with my darker roots, that worked out fine. It filled in, gave depth, and never felt sticky or heavy the way past root sprays did on my head.

Buy if you:

  • Have darker roots and want silvers gone at the part line in seconds
  • Are in between salon colors and don’t want any gray showing at all
  • Hated how sticky other root sprays felt on your scalp
  • Want to still move and style your hair after spraying

My Grays Are Barely Coming In. I Still Don’t Want Them There.

My grays are concentrated along the part line, not everywhere, just enough that I clock them every time I look in the mirror between salon visits. I’d used other root sprays before, but the Schwarzkopf Keratin Root spray was new to me, and the keratin-and-thickening angle gave me a reason to test it instead of defaulting to what I already had.

This one’s interesting because it’s supposed to help roots appear thicker. So I thought, well, let’s give it a go.

The Hand Test: “Light Brown” Isn’t Light Brown

I sprayed it on my hand first, and that’s light brown to me? That’s kind of a medium to dark brown. I find these tend to be a little bit darker than you think they’re going to be, and this one proved it before it ever touched my head.

This is the one real catch with this root touch up spray, and it’s not in the marketing anywhere. If you’re a true light brown or a dirty blonde, that can is going to go darker than the label promises. Doing the hand test takes ten seconds and saves you from a hairline that doesn’t match. I’d do it every time with a new shade, and I’d lean a shade lighter than you think you need when you order.

I got lucky. I have a darker root, so that medium to dark brown was close to where I already live.

Mirror in One Hand, Can in the Other

Schwarzkopf® Keratin Root Light Brown Temporary Color & Thickening Spray: A woman in her late fifties holding a mirror a

It matched my color pretty well on the first pass. I grabbed a mirror, sprayed a hairline on one side, and went slow because I just wanted to be a little bit careful around the part. That works really well.

What I noticed right away is that it didn’t just sit on top as a flat block of color. It filled in and gave me a little more depth and richness through the part line, so I don’t feel like you can see the silvers coming through. It’s a nice natural way to handle it rather than looking painted on.

Then the part I cared about most. It doesn’t feel sticky or heavy. Some of the ones I’ve used in the past have felt a little sticky on my head, that crusty helmet feeling where you don’t want to touch your own hair for the rest of the day. This one feels very natural, like I can move it and style it and do whatever. And I feel more confident, which is the entire reason I reach for these in the first place.

Worth knowing: it goes on clean, dry hair and needs about 5 minutes to set before you start touching it. You can check the current price on Amazon here.

Where This Sits Against Other Root Sprays

Most root sprays make me choose: decent coverage or hair that doesn’t feel shellacked. This one doesn’t force that trade. The 2 oz can is small enough to live in a makeup bag, and the non-sticky finish is the single thing that puts it ahead of every other spray I’ve reached for between colors.

It’s also the cheapest possible way to stretch time between salon visits. One can against one touch-up appointment isn’t a close comparison on cost, and since it’s temporary and shampoos out, there’s no commitment if the shade turns out wrong for you. That’s the trade-off though. You’re re-spraying after every wash.

Would I Keep Using It?

Yes, on my part line and hairline, which is exactly what it’s for. It matched my roots on the first pass, added real depth to the part line rather than sitting on top like a flat block of pigment, and shampooed out completely without leaving buildup. For something I’m using every ten to fourteen days between appointments, checking all three of those boxes is enough to keep it in the rotation.

The only thing I’d flag again is the shade. Light Brown is not light. If you’re darker rooted like me, this is an easy one to try. If you’re lighter, do the hand test first and be prepared to go down a shade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it rub off on my pillow or collar?

Schwarzkopf says it resists smudging and transfer through the day once it’s set, which takes about 5 minutes. Give it that full set time before you put on a light-colored top. It shampoos out completely, so anything that does transfer isn’t permanent.

Is it safe if I have a sensitive scalp?

The formula is hypoallergenic and skips ammonia, peroxide, parabens, phthalates and sulfates, which is unusual in this category. I’d still spray a small patch and wait before doing your whole hairline if you react to things easily. It also doesn’t leave buildup, so there’s nothing sitting on your scalp between washes.

How many uses do you get from one 2 oz can?

That depends entirely on how much hair you’re covering. A part line and hairline touch-up like mine uses very little, so a can stretches a long way. If you’re spraying a full crown every wash day, expect to go through it much faster and consider the 2-pack.
