The Sevich Hairline Powder is worth buying if you have grays or roots coming in between colorings and want something that fills them in seconds. Dark brown, compact, with a sponge puff and a built-in mirror. It filled my part line on the first pass. Buy it.

How this review was made: written from my own video review of this product. Every opinion here is my own, from using it myself.
Quick Verdict
One pass along my part line and the gap feeling was gone. These work so fast, and I love how compact it is. The little built-in mirror still confuses me a bit, but it’s there and it doesn’t hurt.
Buy if you:
- Have grays coming through and a coloring appointment still weeks away
- Hate the gap feeling in your part line like I do
- Travel and want a root touch up that fits in a pocket
- Have dark brown to black hair and want highlights grown out less obvious
Skip if you:
- Want one-and-done color. This washes out with your shampoo, so you’re redoing it
- Have light or blonde hair. This one is dark brown only
- Need to cover a large bald area rather than roots and sparse spots

“See, Look at That Already”
Roots at the part, scalp showing through, not a lot, but enough that I clocked it the second I looked in the mirror. I dabbed the sponge in the pot, ran it along the part once, and it was gone. One pass, maybe four seconds. That’s the whole appeal of this kind of hairline powder for women, and you can see today’s price on Amazon here.
I kept going, a bit more at one side, then the other, because the gray is coming in across the board right now. Same result each time. Dab, drag, done.
The Mirror I Still Don’t Totally Get
There’s a mirror inside the lid, peel the film, and there it is. I hadn’t seen that on the other root powders I’ve tried, and the idea makes sense: touch up your part line without hunting for a bathroom. The execution is the problem. The mirror is maybe two inches wide, which is fine for checking a single gray but useless for tracking a part line from front to crown. Nice thought, needs to be twice the size.
The other thing to know before you open it: there are two steps that aren’t obvious. You unscrew the top to get the sponge, then the lid flips open separately to get to the powder. I fumbled that for a second on camera. It’s not a problem, just not a one-motion compact.
And because it washes out with your regular shampoo, this isn’t a fix. It’s a touch up. You redo it the next time you wash.
Where the Hairline Powder Earned Its Spot

Part line first, sides second. That’s how I used it and that’s where it works. The powder goes down dry and the sponge gives you more control than a spray does, which matters when you’re only filling a half-inch strip and don’t want color on your forehead or the pillowcase.
I only have a little coming in right now, so I wasn’t layering it on. I just went along and touched it up a little bit. If you’ve got more gray than I do, the listing says you can layer for fuller coverage, and I’d expect that to hold given how easily the first pass took.
The compact size is what keeps it in my bag instead of under the bathroom sink. It’s flat enough to clear a TSA bin without a second thought, and small enough that I grabbed it once for a video call I hadn’t planned on. It’s not a dye and it knows it, no developer, no wait time, no commitment. Just color back in your roots until the next appointment, or until your highlights stop looking so grown-out.
One thing worth knowing on timing: the price on this one moves around a lot, and it’s sitting a little under its usual level from the past three months right now. It’s also selling better lately, currently #2,338 in Beauty & Personal Care against a 90 day average of #3,060, with more than 1,000 bought in the past month. Check the current price on Amazon rather than assuming, because it swings.
Opening It the First Time
Unscrew the top, pull out the sponge, flip the lid, peel the film off the mirror. That’s the whole setup. It’s got a cute little hanging thing on it too, which I assume is for a bag or a hook.
Then you put the sponge on the powder and go. No brush to learn, no nozzle to aim, nothing to charge or shake.
Get the Shade Right Before You Order
Dark brown is the shade I used, and it’s made to blend with dark brown through black hair. If you’re sitting between two tones, the brand suggests layering with a neighboring shade, which means buying two. Worth thinking about before you click.
It’s marketed for women and men both, for thinning edges, a widow’s peak, a widening part. My use was simpler than that. Grays and roots. For that, the sponge control and one-pass fill beat a spray every time. If that sounds like where you are right now, it’s an easy one to try at the Amazon listing.
Pros
- Fills the part line on the first pass, no waiting
- Compact enough to travel with or keep in a bag
- Sponge gives controlled application along a narrow part
- Works on the sides and scattered grays, not just the main part
- Built-in mirror is something I hadn’t seen on others
Cons
- Two-step opening (unscrew, then flip) isn’t obvious the first time
- The mirror is small enough that I couldn’t work out what it’s really for
- Washes out with shampoo, so it’s a repeat job, not a fix
- Dark brown only covers the dark brown to black range
What we’d improve
Two small things the next version could fix:
- The mirror size, if it’s meant to help you see your hairline, make it wide enough to show the whole part, or move it to the outside of the lid so it’s usable one-handed.
- The two-step opening, the sponge screws off and the powder lid flips separately. One hinged lid covering both would make a pocket touch-up faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it come off on my pillowcase or a white collar?
It’s built to hold through sweat, wind and humidity until you shampoo, so it’s not a powder that drifts off through the day. The sponge also keeps it on the strip you’re targeting instead of oversprayed across your scalp. Still a dark pigment though, so I wouldn’t lean a freshly-done part against anything white.
Can I use it every day?
Yes, it’s listed as non-greasy and safe for daily use on all hair types, including sensitive scalps. Since it washes out with regular shampoo, daily use just means reapplying after each wash.
Does it work on thinning hair, or only on gray roots?
Both. It’s made to cover sparse spots, thinning edges and a widening part line as well as grays, including postpartum or weight-loss thinning. I used it for roots and grays specifically, so that’s the part I can speak to from my own hair.
How does this compare to a root touch-up spray?
The powder-and-sponge setup is more precise, because you dab exactly where you want it instead of misting a cloud and hoping. Sprays cover a bigger area faster if you have a lot to hide. For a part line and a few grays, the puff wins.
