The Revlon ColorStay Xtensionnaire Mascara is worth buying if you want thicker lashes without curling them first. It’s loaded with fibers, it’s the blackest black, and layered over a black fiber primer it took me under two minutes with no extra coats. Buy it.

Quick Verdict

I don’t curl my lashes. I probably should but I don’t. Layered over a black fiber primer, this mascara thickened them in under two minutes with no extra coats. The result speaks for itself.

Buy if you:

  • Skip the lash curler and still want fullness
  • Are the queen of quick out the door like me
  • Want a blackest black with real fibers in it
  • Already have decent lashes and want extra oomph

I Didn’t Curl. I Just Put My Makeup On.

No curler, no prep, I went straight to primer then mascara, start to finish in under two minutes. The Revlon ColorStay Xtensionnaire is the top coat doing the real work, and you can check today’s price on Amazon if you want to follow along.

I started with a lash primer first, and that one surprised me. Most primers I’ve used in the past are white. This one’s black, and it’s got little extra hairs in it. I held the mirror slightly behind so I wasn’t poking myself, went up with a few strokes across like normal mascara, and did one eye first so you could see the difference.

It’s a little tacky is what I would say, like a little sticky. And you could already see it thicken.

The Two-Minute Window

You want to go in within two minutes with your mascara. That’s the part people get wrong. The primer being tacky isn’t a flaw, it’s the point, because it helps everything stick and stay. Wait too long and it dries down and you’ve wasted the step.

So I went straight in with the colorstay xtensionnaire mascara on top. Which also has fibers in it, which thickens my eyelashes, which I love. The two together is really where this works.

What the Blackest Black Did in One Pass

One pass, no second coat, and my lashes looked done, which, when you’re not curling and not layering, is the whole win. I have decent lashes to start with, but the fiber-on-fiber stack pushed them into full-and-finished territory without me standing at the mirror stacking coats.

The wand is the thing that took adjusting. It’s kind of got an interesting wand, it twists and turns, and it took me a little bit to get used to in the beginning because I haven’t used one quite like this. Revlon calls it a tapered brush. Once I got the angle, it grabbed the lashes near the root without me fighting it.

And the fibers. It’s got a lot of fibers in it, and once it dries that’s where the length shows. Revlon’s claim is 2X longer looking lashes with up to 24 hour wear. What I can speak to is that it dried down fast and the combination was absolutely beautiful, and I’m very happy with both of these products. If that’s the look you’re after, it’s easy to see it on Amazon.

Does it hold up through a full day?

It dried down and stayed put for me, which is what I care about with a fiber formula. Fiber mascaras can flake if the base underneath isn’t tacky enough, and that’s exactly what the primer solves. Revlon lists it as serum-infused with Pro Vitamin B5 and rated up to 24 hour wear with their Adapti-Flex technology. I didn’t run a 24 hour test, so take the number from the box, not from me.

One thing worth knowing if you’re pricing it out: this one’s price moves around a lot. It’s sitting about where it’s been for the last three months, but it’s been considerably cheaper at points, so it’s worth looking at the live number instead of assuming.

When I Don’t Reach For It

I don’t do this every day often. I just use the mascara on its own because it’s kind of good enough for that normal day-to-day quick out the door, which I’m the queen of. The primer comes out when you’re going out and you want a little extra oomph, or you just want to have that big lash day.

So if you’re after a bare, separated, barely-there lash, this isn’t the one. Fibers plus blackest black is a fuller look by design. I don’t like them too fake looking either, and this stayed on the right side of that for me, but that’s a preference call.

Who Should Get the Xtensionnaire Mascara

If you’ve given up on curling your lashes, this is the easy swap. That’s the real takeaway. I didn’t curl, I didn’t layer coats, I didn’t fuss with anything, and I got fullness in about the time it takes to brush your teeth.

The wand learning curve is real and I’d name it again. Give it a few mornings before you judge it. And the two-minute primer window means this isn’t quite a one-product routine when you want the maximum version of the look.

If you skip the curler and want fullness in under two minutes, this combo earns a spot in your routine. You can check the current price on Amazon, just watch for a dip, because it swings.

Pros

  • Thickened my lashes without curling them first
  • Loaded with fibers, so length shows once it dries
  • One quick pass, no stacking coats needed
  • Good enough on its own for a normal day-to-day face

Cons

  • The twisting wand took me a little bit to get used to because I hadn’t used one like it
  • The biggest version of the look needs a primer underneath, applied within two minutes
  • Price swings a fair bit, so the day you buy matters

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe for contact lens wearers?

Fiber mascaras are the one category I’d be cautious with if you wear contacts, since loose fibers can migrate. Revlon doesn’t list an ophthalmologist-tested claim in the product details I have, so if your eyes are sensitive, patch one eye first.

How do I take it off at night?

Use an oil-based or bi-phase remover and soak rather than scrub. Fiber formulas don’t rinse off with plain water, and rubbing a fiber mascara is how you lose lashes. Hold a soaked pad on the lash line for a few seconds, then wipe downward.

How long does a tube last before I should replace it?

Three months from opening is the standard guidance for any mascara, and fiber formulas dry out faster than plain ones. If the wand starts dragging instead of gliding, it’s done.

Does the primer have to be the same brand?

No. The one I used is a separate black fiber primer, not a Revlon product. What matters is that it’s tacky and you get your mascara on within two minutes, not whose name is on the tube.
