Oh, you can see it changing already. That’s crazy. That was my first reaction the second I started blending this color changing foundation into my skin. It comes out of the bottle a plain off-white, almost like a pale primer, and it’s supposed to shift to your tone as you work it in. Color-adapting foundations have a reputation for shifting to a muddy middle-ground beige on everyone, so I went in skeptical.

Quick Verdict

The liquid comes out an off-white color and I watched it shift to match me the second I started blending. Medium coverage, a glowy dewy finish, and a teeny clean scent that doesn’t bother me. I was really impressed with how well the color matched.

The Off-White Liquid Changed Color Before My Eyes

It’s real. Within a few seconds of spreading it, the off-white warmed up and started matching me. I’m not sure if it’s the pH of your skin or the shade-sensing beads doing the work, but the shift does happen. I tested the medium shade, and the color matched me quite well.

What’s Inside the Bottle

SPF 50 is the headline, and it’s a 4-in-1 formula on paper. The BARUBT foundation packs SPF 50 sunscreen, waterproof and sweatproof wear, buildable coverage, and hydration into one 1.41 fl oz bottle. The color technology comes from shade-sensing beads, encapsulated pigments that release and adjust from cool to warm as you blend.

It’s also enriched with Sodium Hyaluronate and Allantoin, which is why it leans hydrating rather than drying, and it’s pitched at all skin types including mature and dry skin. It came with a little applicator too, which is great, though I didn’t end up using it.

Medium Coverage With a Glowy, Dewy Finish

Medium coverage, buildable to full, no heavy feeling. I started on just the lower part of my face so I could see the difference clearly, then put it right on and spread from there. It’s giving me some good coverage without looking heavy, and it settled into a slightly glowy, dewy look, which I like.

When I stepped back a little bit, you can see it better, and the match held. This is the medium shade and the medium coverage level, so if you want more you can build it. There’s also a teeny light scent, but it’s a very nice clean scent. It’s nothing that would bother me to wear.

The Included Applicator Isn’t the One I’d Reach For

It did come with an applicator, but I switched to a brush almost right away. I prefer to use a brush because I find I can just spread it a little bit better and get it more even. It’s a minor friction, not a flaw, but if you’re expecting the sponge in the box to do the job perfectly, you might find yourself reaching for your own tools like I did.

The other thing worth knowing: the color shift depends on your own skin, so the exact match can vary person to person. On me it matched quite well, but that magic-changing part is the piece you’ll want to test on your own face before you decide.

Who This Foundation Actually Fits

If you’re someone who has ever bought a shade that looked right in the store and wrong the second you got home, this is the exact problem the color changing foundation is trying to solve. It adapts to you instead of the other way around. For me, that took the guesswork out of matching entirely.

It also suits mature and dry skin thanks to the hydrating ingredients, and the dewy finish plays nicely with skin that doesn’t want to look flat or powdery. The SPF 50 and sweatproof formula are a real bonus for everyday errands and outdoor wear, just know I can’t vouch for it through a full sweat session from personal use.

My Advice Before You Try It

Give it a few seconds to change before you judge the match. The color doesn’t shift instantly the moment it touches skin, it develops as you blend, so blend it fully before deciding it’s too light or too warm. Start with a small amount on the lower half of your face like I did, so you can see the before and after clearly.

And grab your own brush. The applicator works, but a brush gave me a smoother, more even spread. Really impressed with these color changing foundations overall, and this one landed well for me.

Pros

  • Off-white liquid shifts to match your skin as you blend
  • Color matched me quite well in the medium shade
  • Medium, buildable coverage that doesn’t look heavy
  • Glowy, dewy finish rather than flat matte
  • Only a teeny, clean scent that doesn’t bother me

Cons

  • I preferred my own brush over the included applicator for even spreading
  • The finish is dewy, so it’s not for anyone wanting full matte
  • How well the color matches depends on your own skin, so results can vary

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the color changing foundation actually match your skin?

It uses shade-sensing beads, encapsulated pigments that release and adjust from cool to warm as you blend. The off-white liquid develops into your tone within seconds of spreading it. I’m not certain whether skin pH plays a role, but the shift is real and it matched me quite well.

Does it work for dry or mature skin?

Yes, it’s suited to dry and mature skin. It’s enriched with Sodium Hyaluronate and Allantoin for hydration, and the finish is dewy rather than drying, so it won’t emphasize dry patches the way a flat matte formula can.

Can it be used as a concealer too?

The formula is a foundation and concealer hybrid with buildable coverage. It’s marketed to help cover acne scars, dark circles, and redness. I tested it as a base at medium coverage, and you can layer more where you need extra concealing.

Is the SPF 50 enough to skip separate sunscreen?

It carries SPF 50, which is a solid level of protection built into the foundation. That said, foundation is usually applied thinner than the amount needed for full SPF coverage, so for long sun exposure a dedicated sunscreen underneath is still smart.

Will it hold up during a workout or in humidity?

It’s formulated to be waterproof and sweatproof, which is the pitch for gym, swimming, and humid climates. I didn’t run a full sweat test on camera, so I can’t confirm the 24-hour claim from personal use, but the formula is built for active wear.

What tool should I use to apply it?

A brush worked best for me. It comes with an applicator, but I prefer a brush because I can spread it a little more evenly. Either will let the color develop, so use whichever gives you a smoother finish.

Does it have a strong smell?

No, just a teeny light scent that’s clean and pleasant. It’s nothing that would bother me to wear all day, and it fades rather than lingering.

How big is the bottle and will it last?

Each bottle is 1.41 fl oz, a standard foundation size. Since it’s medium-to-full coverage, a little goes a fair way, so how long it lasts depends on how often and how thickly you apply it.
