Quick Verdict
I put both Laura Geller baked foundations on opposite sides of my face, and the Balance-n-Glow won my everyday vote for that youthful, dewy look. The Balance-n-Brighten gives heavier coverage and more color correcting, so I keep both. They’re both great for different reasons.
Buy if you:
- Want a glowy, dewy finish for daily wear (go Glow)
- Have mature skin and want a more youthful look
- Want heavier coverage that takes pink down (go Brighten)
- Like a powder you can dab or brush for different intensity
Skip if you:
- Need to match a shade online without seeing it (the marbled colors make swatching tricky on camera)
- Want a full-coverage matte for oily skin all day
- Prefer a liquid foundation over a baked powder

Two Pans, One Face, Opposite Sides
I split my face down the middle, matte Balance-n-Brighten on the left, dewy Balance-n-Glow Illuminating on the right, both in medium, and the difference was obvious the second I looked in the mirror. The Brighten pulled the pink out of my skin and sat heavier; the Glow lit me up. You can grab either through this link, and I’ll tell you exactly which one to reach for first.
Here’s the short version. The Brighten is the matte, heavier-coverage one with more color correcting. The Glow gives that dewy, youthful finish I want most days. They’re both great. My everyday go-to is the Glow.
What’s In These Pans
Both are baked pressed powders, 9g per pan, no SPF, available in 9 shades. You can see the Brighten pan is kind of got a lot of colors in it, which I really like. That marbleized swirl is the color-correcting technology, and it’s part of why it takes the pink down in my skin as I blend. Coverage on both lands at light to medium, so neither is a heavy spackle out of the pan.
| Spec | Detail |

Dab For Thicker, Brush For Sheer
The application trick is the whole game with the Brighten. You can either dab it on for a little bit of a thicker look, or you can just kind of brush it on for something lighter. Both work really well, and that flexibility is why I rate the matte one so highly for coverage. When I dabbed, it built up and took down the pink in my skin noticeably. When I brushed, it stayed reasonably sheer and natural.
The Glow is my daily driver. On the right side of my face it caught the light in a way the matte side simply didn’t, not glittery, just that lit-from-within look that a flat matte powder actively kills. For mature skin especially, that luminosity reads younger than more coverage does. The Brighten technically does more; the Glow looks better.
The Camera Can’t Quite Show The Glow
The one frustration: the dewy difference is obvious in person and hard to capture. I could really see the shine on the glow side in the mirror, but I’m not sure it fully reads on camera. That matters if you’re trying to shade-match or judge finish from photos online. The marbled multicolor pan also makes it tough to eyeball your shade from a swatch. I have reasonably light to medium skin, and the medium works well for me in both, so that’s a useful reference point if you’re not sure about color.

Who Each One Suits
If your skin leans mature and you want that fresh, dewy finish, the Glow is the one. It’s my everyday go-to for exactly that reason. If you want more coverage, or you fight a bit of redness and want something to take the pink down, the Brighten delivers with its color correcting and matte finish. And here’s my favorite move: sometimes I’ll put the matte on first and layer the glow over it when I want a slightly heavier look. So you don’t strictly have to choose, but if budget says one, your finish preference decides it.
Brighten vs Glow, Head To Head
The real choice is matte coverage versus dewy glow. The Balance-n-Brighten wins on coverage and color correcting, takes the pink down, and lets you dab for a thicker look. The Balance-n-Glow wins on finish, giving that youthful, glowy appearance for daily wear. Neither is a heavy full-coverage matte for all-day oil control, so if that’s your need, both will feel light. For me, the Glow takes the everyday slot and the Brighten is my coverage backup. They’re both great.
What I’d Tell A First-Time Buyer
Pick your finish before your shade. Decide whether you want dewy or matte, then go medium if your skin is light to medium like mine. Don’t try to judge the exact shade from the swirled pan online; the colors self-adjust as you blend. If you’re torn, start with the Glow, dewy finish covers most days. Add the Brighten when redness becomes the problem or you need the coverage to actually hold. That’s the order I’d do it in again.
Pros
- Glow gives a youthful, dewy finish I reach for daily
- Brighten has more color correcting and takes the pink down in my skin
- You can dab for thicker coverage or brush for something sheer
- Both layer together when I want a heavier look
- Medium shade worked well on my light-to-medium skin in both
Cons
- The dewy glow is obvious in the mirror but hard to see on camera
- The marbled multicolor pan makes shade matching from photos tricky
- Neither is a heavy full-coverage matte for all-day oil control
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Laura Geller baked foundation is better for mature skin?
The Balance-n-Glow Illuminating is my pick for mature skin. It gives a youthful, glowy, dewy appearance, which I think reads better as we get a little older than a flat matte finish.
Which one gives more coverage?
The Balance-n-Brighten gives heavier coverage. Dab it on rather than brush it for a thicker look, and it has more color correcting to take down redness.
Can I wear both together?
Yes, and I do. I’ll put the matte Brighten on first, then layer the Glow over it when I want a slightly heavier look with that dewy finish on top.
What shade should I get if I’m unsure?
Medium is a safe starting point if your skin is light to medium. I have reasonably light-to-medium skin and the medium works well for me in both foundations.
Do these baked foundations have SPF?
No, neither has SPF. If you want sun protection, layer a separate sunscreen underneath before applying either powder.
How big is each pan?
Each pan holds 9g of baked pressed powder. Because you apply it as a powder, a little goes a long way per application.
Is the Glow too shiny for oily skin?
The Glow adds a dewy sheen, so if you’re very oily you may prefer the matte Brighten. The Glow’s finish is luminous rather than greasy, but the Brighten is the safer choice if you want to control shine.
Are these worth it over a drugstore powder foundation?
If you want the marbleized color-correcting technology and a dewy or matte baked finish, these justify the step up. The self-adjusting color and the option to dab or brush for different intensity is what you’re paying for. Check the current price at the link before deciding.
